MONTREAL — Yiacovakis Hilaire poured in a game-high 23 points and Jean Guerdy added 20 as UQAM pulled away late to defeat McGill 85–74 in RSEQ men's university basketball, Thursday night at Love Competition Hall.

Although this marked only McGill's second game against an RSEQ opponent, the Redbirds dropped to 1–4 in the standings, a record that includes a 1-2 mark from interlocking preseason contests versus AUS and OUA teams that count this season toward Quebec league play.

The game featured 10 lead changes and was tight throughout the first three quarters, with UQAM leading 19–18 after the opening period and 46–44 at halftime. The visitors held a 67–66 edge heading into the fourth before closing on an 18–8 run to secure the 11-point win. McGill managed only three field goals in the fourth quarter. 

"We had 14 turnovers in the first half and had we taken care of the ball there, we would have had a bigger lead, going into halftime," said McGill head coach Ryan Thorne, whose troops committed 22 turnovers in the game that the Citadins capitalized on for 28 points. "And down the stretch, then it was just much of the same. We turned over the ball. We were loose with it. And they were opportunistic. UQAM's a strong, physical, mature team. And if you make mistakes and they're gonna make you pay."

The Redbirds countered with 15 points from 16 UQAM turnovers.

"I thought our guys fought hard, they grew and rebounded from the last game (an 83-41 loss at Laval two days earlier)," Thorne added.  "We could have easily came in here with that same mentality but we fought and did a good job. It's just those little things, mistakes, that we're still making in practice and they showed themselves in the game. And so when it's close and when you want to win, you have those good habits (to control the game). But those bad habits are what hurt us today."

Saransh Padhy, a 6-foot-7 junior from Stouffville, Ont., led McGill with 18 points on 9-for-11 shooting, while rookie Sean Duff and sophomore Isaac Moore each contributed 17. Duff, a 6-foot-1 guard from Collège Montmorency, hit four three-pointers and added a pair of assists, while Moore chipped in seven rebounds. Miles King, a local freshman from John Abbott College, added eight points, five assists and three steals.

UQAM shot 52.3 per cent from the floor and 35.3 per cent from three-point range, while McGill connected on 45.3 per cent overall and 28.6 per cent from long distance. The Citadins were 11-for-15 from the line, while McGill was 8-for-11. 

Hilaire shot 9-for-16 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, while Guerdy went 10-for-15 and added five rebounds. Steeven Beljour-Diaz tallied 11 points and six assists for UQAM, which also outscored the Redbirds 48–30 in the paint.

"A lot of the guys are coming off illness, and I'm not trying to make any excuses but we've had guys with strep throat, pneumonia and other things," noted Thorne. "Then Emmanuel Tchicaya (an import from France) went down early in the game, so now we we're down a point-guard and we just had to try to grind it out as best we could. But we bounced back today and that's why I've got to applaud the effort. So I'm proud of the fight we showed, and we've just got to take care of the little details."

Despite the loss, McGill still holds the upper hand in the all-time series between the local rivals, 54–40 in 94 lifetime meetings since 2003.

The Redbirds return to action Saturday (Nov. 15) when they host No. 2-ranked Bishop's (5–0) at 4 p.m. UQAM (3-1) is idle until Nov. 20, when it visits Laval (3–2).

L'UQAM s'impose face à McGill dans le championnat universitaire de basket-ball

Les pertes de balle coûtent cher aux Citadins, qui devancent les Redbirds dans la dernière ligne droite

MONTRÉAL — Yiacovakis Hilaire a inscrit 23 points, le meilleur total de la rencontre, et Jean Guerdy en a ajouté 20 pour permettre à l'UQAM de s'imposer 85-74 face à McGill dans le championnat universitaire masculin de basket-ball de la RSEQ, jeudi soir au Love Competition Hall.

Bien qu'il ne s'agissait que du deuxième match de McGill contre un adversaire du RSEQ, les Redbirds ont chuté à 1-4 au classement, un bilan qui comprend une fiche de 1-2 lors des matchs de pré-saison contre les équipes de l'AUS et de l'OUA qui comptent cette saison pour le championnat québécois.

Le match a connu 10 changements de leader et a été serré tout au long des trois premiers quarts, l'UQAM menant 19-18 après la première période et 46-44 à la mi-temps. Les visiteurs menaient 67-66 à l'entame du quatrième quart-temps, avant de terminer sur un 18-8 pour s'assurer une victoire de 11 points. McGill n'a réussi que trois paniers au quatrième quart-temps.

« Nous avons commis 14 revirements en première mi-temps et si nous avions mieux protégé le ballon, nous aurions eu une avance plus importante à la mi-temps », a déclaré l'entraîneur-chef de McGill, Ryan Thorne, dont les troupes ont commis 22 revirements dans le match, que les Citadins ont exploités pour marquer 28 points. « Et dans la dernière ligne droite, c'était à peu près la même chose. Nous avons perdu le ballon. Nous avons été négligents. Et elles ont su saisir leur chance. L'UQAM est une équipe solide, physique et mature. Si vous commettez des erreurs, elles vous le feront payer. »

Les Redbirds ont riposté en marquant 15 points sur 16 revirements de l'UQAM.

« Je pense que nos joueurs se sont bien battus, ils ont progressé et se sont remis du dernier match (une défaite 83-41 à Laval deux jours plus tôt) », a ajouté Thorne. « Nous aurions pu facilement venir ici avec la même mentalité, mais nous nous sommes battus et avons fait du bon travail. Ce sont juste ces petites choses, ces erreurs, que nous continuons à faire à l'entraînement et qui se sont manifestées pendant le match. Et donc, quand le score est serré et que vous voulez gagner, vous avez ces bonnes habitudes (pour contrôler le match). Mais ce sont ces mauvaises habitudes qui nous ont fait du tort aujourd'hui. »

Saransh Padhy, un vétéran de 6 pieds et 7 pouces, originaire de Stouffville, en Ontario, a mené McGill avec 18 points sur 9 tirs sur 11, tandis que la recrue Sean Duff et le sophomore Isaac Moore ont chacun contribué avec 17 points. Duff, un garde qui mesure 6 pieds et 1 pouce, originaire du Collège Montmorency, a réussi quatre tirs à trois points et ajouté deux passes décisives, tandis que Moore a contribué avec sept rebonds. Miles King, un étudiant de première année originaire du John Abbott College, a ajouté huit points, cinq passes décisives et trois interceptions.

L'UQAM a réussi 52,3 % de ses tirs au panier et 35,3 % de ses tirs à trois points, tandis que McGill a réussi 45,3 % de ses tirs au total et 28,6 % de ses tirs à longue distance. Les Citadins ont réussi 11 tirs sur 15 depuis la ligne, tandis que McGill en a réussi 8 sur 11.

Hilaire a réussi 9 tirs sur 16, dont 4 sur 6 à trois points, tandis que Guerdy a réussi 10 tirs sur 15 et ajouté cinq rebonds. Steeven Beljour-Diaz a marqué 11 points et réalisé six passes décisives pour l'UQAM, qui a également dominé les Redbirds 48-30 dans la raquette.

« Beaucoup de joueurs sortent d'une maladie, et je ne cherche pas à trouver des excuses, mais nous avons eu des joueurs atteints d'angine streptococcique, de pneumonie et d'autres maladies », a noté Thorne. « Puis Emmanuel Tchicaya (un joueur importé de France) s'est blessé tôt dans le match, donc maintenant nous sommes à court d'un meneur et nous avons dû essayer de nous débrouiller du mieux que nous pouvions. Mais nous avons rebondi aujourd'hui et c'est pourquoi je dois saluer leurs efforts. Je suis donc fier de la combativité dont nous avons fait preuve, et nous devons simplement nous occuper des petits détails. »

Malgré cette défaite, McGill conserve l'avantage dans la série historique entre les deux rivaux locaux, avec 54 victoires contre 40 en 94 rencontres depuis 2003.

Les Redbirds reprendront du service samedi 15 novembre à 16 h en accueillant Bishop's (5-0), classé n° 2. L'UQAM (3-1) sera au repos jusqu'au 20 novembre, date à laquelle il se rendra à Laval (3-2).
