MONTREAL — Blueliner Katya Blong from Auckland, New Zealand, scored the game-winner midway through the third period as the McGill Martlets skated to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Carleton Ravens in women's preseason hockey Friday night at McConnell Arena.
It was McGill's second straight win over the Ravens since they bolted from the RSEQ conference to join the OUA last season. The result improved McGill's lifetime head-to-head record to 110-12-1 lifetime against Carleton.
The Martlets led 1-0 after the opening period, thanks to a power-play goal by Meganne Chailler of Carignan, Que., at 17:14, assisted by Syrine Kacem. After a scoreless second, Carleton pulled even at 6:36 of the third on an even-strength marker from Abigail Robinson. But the Martlets regained the lead for good at 11:31 when Blong, a kinesiology sophomore, converted on the power play, with helpers from India Benoit and Elodie Boutin.
The Martlets went 2-for-4 on the power play, while Carleton was 0-for-1. McGill outshot the Ravens 30-18, including a 12-3 margin in the third period.
Goaltender Jade Rivard-Coulombe of Chateauguay, Que., earned the win for McGill with 17 saves on 18 shots. Carleton split duties between back-up Kaitlyn Langille, who was saddled with the loss despite allowing only one goal on 21 shots over the final 27:52 of action, and starter Ella Grad, who stopped eight of nine shots in 29:34.
The Martlets, now 2-1 in preseason play, will close out their exhibition schedule by hosting long-time rival Queen's on Oct. 5 in a 3 p.m.puck drop at McConnell Arena. Carleton (2-2) will open its OUA regular season at home versus Waterloo on Oct. 10.
