ST. CATHARINES, Ont. — Maria Fletcher of Vancouver, B.C., powered to a decisive win in the women's single B final, highlighting the McGill Martlets' effort at the OUA rowing championships, which wrapped up Saturday under crisp fall skies on the Royal Canadian Henley course.
McGill finished 10th of 14 teams in the women's standings.
Fletcher, a 19-year-old political science sophomore completed her 2,000-metre race in eight minutes, 21.55 seconds for a commanding victory over Toronto (8:30.61). She placed seventh overall but her time was fast enough to have been a fifth-place finish had she been in the A final.
Fletcher also just missed a podium finish with the varsity eight (W8+), which placed fourth in the A final, posting a time of 6:55.67, less than two seconds off the pace for bronze won by Ottawa in 6:53.79. The race was won by Queen's (6:42.12), with the other podium spot going to Brock (6:48.03).
That Martlets eight featured Varya Kataria (coxswain), Maria Fletcher, Kaelin Vasseur, Emma Nevala, Lily Dinwoodie, Naomi Fandrich, Eloise Doesserich, Gillian Helliwell, and Kaitlin Puddy. The event was won by Queen's, with Brock and Ottawa rounding out the medals.
McGill also finished fifth in the lightweight single (Emilie Reid ) and the varsity double (Kaitlin Puddy and Naomi Fandrich).
Carleton's Rosie O'Brien was named OUA rowing athlete of the year after winning gold in the lightweight single. Queen's Scott Feddery earned team coach of the year, while Ottawa's Ian Dekker and Sarah Healey shared developmental coach of the year honours.
Queen's captured its third straight OUA women's title, amassing 543 points, ahead of Western (269) and Toronto (206). The standings were rounded out by Brock (178), Ottawa (134), Guelph (123), Carleton (119), Trent (119), McMaster (108), McGill (74), Waterloo (50), Ontario Tech (31), Nipissing (16) and Royal Military College (0).
The McGill rowing program will celebrate its centennial year by hosting the final regatta of the fall season, the Canadian University Rowing Association's (CURA) national championship, at the Olympic Basin on Île Notre-Dame, just south of Montreal, Nov. 1–2. The event coincides with the centennial celebration of McGill Rowing, founded in 1925, and the 50th anniversary of the Olympic Basin, inaugurated for the world junior championships in 1975 as a test event ahead of the 1976 Summer Games in Montreal.

CATHARINES, Ontario — Maria Fletcher, de Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique, a remporté une victoire décisive dans la finale B du skiff féminin, soulignant les efforts des Martlets de McGill lors des championnats d'aviron de l'OUA, qui se sont terminés samedi sous un ciel automnal limpide sur le parcours Royal Canadian Henley.
McGill a terminé 10e sur 14 équipes au classement féminin.
Fletcher, une étudiante de 19 ans en deuxième année de sciences politiques, a terminé sa course de 2 000 mètres en 8 minutes et 21,55 secondes, remportant une victoire écrasante sur Toronto (8:30,61). Elle s'est classée septième au classement général, mais son temps était suffisamment rapide pour lui permettre de terminer cinquième si elle avait participé à la finale A.
Fletcher a également manqué de peu le podium avec l'équipe universitaire à huit (W8+), qui s'est classée quatrième dans la finale A, avec un temps de 6:55,67, à moins de deux secondes du bronze remporté par Ottawa en 6:53,79. La course a été remportée par Queen's (6:42,12), l'autre place sur le podium revenant à Brock (6:48,03).

Scott Feddery, de Queen's, a été nommé entraîneur de l'année, tandis que Ian Dekker et Sarah Healey, d'Ottawa, se sont partagé le titre d'entraîneur de développement de l'année.
Queen's a remporté son troisième titre féminin consécutif de l'OUA, accumulant 543 points, devant Western (269) et Toronto (206). Le programme d'aviron de McGill célébrera son centenaire en accueillant la dernière régate de la saison d'automne, le championnat national de l'Association canadienne d'aviron universitaire (CURA), au bassin olympique de l'île Notre-Dame, juste au sud de Montréal, les 1er et 2 novembre. Cet événement coïncide avec le centenaire de l'aviron à McGill, fondé en 1925, et le 50e anniversaire du bassin olympique, inauguré pour les championnats du monde juniors en 1975 à titre d'événement test avant les Jeux d'été de 1976 à Montréal.
