This week marks the anniversary of the first intercollegiate rowing championship held in Canada, a McGill victory over Toronto in an event held on the Lachine Canal. A newspaper account of the race, published in The Montreal Star on Oct. 18, 1926, is posted below:
LACHINE, QUE – In rough weather and after an accidental collision, McGill's eight-oared crew of novices under the direction of Coach Urban Molmans, won the first inter-University boat race rowed in Canada at Lachine on Saturday, by a length and a half.
Molmans, himself a veteran Henley champion, naturally feels very proud of the victory and has visions of the next Canadian Henley championship honors
In regard to the rumor that McGill won the race on a foul and then had agreed to run it over again, Major D. Stuart Forbes, athletic director of McGill, makes the following statement:
The boats fouled one another owing to the very strong fluky cross wind; no blame was imputed to either. They were quite correctly stopped, returned to the start, and started again.
"It was perhaps unfortunate that the race was delayed until so late in the season but this arose from some quite minor misunderstanding. It is hoped that the race, for the institution of which the principal credit is due to Professor Loudon of the Toronto club, will now be an annual fixture."

CETTE DATE DANS L'HISTOIRE (16 octobre 1926): McGill remporte son premier titre interuniversitaire d'aviron
Cette semaine marque l'anniversaire du premier championnat interuniversitaire d'aviron tenu au Canada, remporté par McGill contre Toronto lors d'un événement disputé sur le canal de Lachine. Un compte rendu de la course, publié dans The Montreal Star le 18 octobre 1926, est reproduit ci-dessous :
LACHINE, QUÉ. – Par temps difficile et après une collision accidentelle, l'équipage de huit rameurs novices de McGill, dirigé par l'entraîneur Urban Molmans, a remporté samedi la première régate interuniversitaire disputée au Canada, à Lachine, avec une avance d'un bateau et demi.
Molmans, lui-même vétéran et champion de Henley, se dit naturellement très fier de cette victoire et entrevoit déjà les honneurs du prochain championnat canadien de Henley.
En ce qui concerne la rumeur selon laquelle McGill aurait remporté la course à la suite d'une faute et aurait ensuite accepté de la refaire, le major D. Stuart Forbes, directeur des sports à McGill, fait la déclaration suivante :
« Les embarcations se sont accrochées en raison d'un fort vent de travers capricieux; aucune faute n'a été attribuée à l'un ou à l'autre équipage. On les a correctement arrêtées, ramenées au point de départ, puis relancées. »
« Il est peut-être malheureux que la course ait été retardée si tard dans la saison, mais cela découle d'un léger malentendu. On espère que cette course — dont le principal mérite de l'organisation revient au professeur Loudon du club de Toronto — deviendra désormais un événement annuel. »
