TORONTO — Forward Emilia Diaz-Ruiz paced McGill with a double-double and the Martlets forced 24 turnovers en route to a convincing 72-52 victory over McMaster in women's preseason basketball action Saturday at the Darcel Wright Memorial Classic.
The Martlets, now 4-1 in non-conference play, rebounded from a narrow 49-48 loss to host Toronto Metropolitan University on Friday by overwhelming Laurier 63-36 earlier Saturday, then carried that momentum into their second game of the day.
Diaz-Ruiz tallyied 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Katie Rathwell added 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting, including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Emma-Jane Scotten chipped in 12 points with three treys, and Seyna Diggs contributed 10 points and eight boards.
McGill shot 31.4 per cent from the floor (27-for-86), hit 22.2 per cent from three-point range (8-for-36) and went 10-for-19 at the foul line (52.6 per cent). The Martlets dominated the glass with a 55-38 rebounding edge, generating 30 second-chance points.
Defensively, McGill held McMaster to 39.2 per cent shooting overall and just 18.2 per cent from long range. The Marauders were led by Tayler Scott's 15 points and eight rebounds, while Emily Frankovic added 12.
McGill will conclude its preseason schedule with home matinees against Ottawa on Oct. 17 and Memorial on Oct. 19.
