MONTREAL – Charles-Antoine Dumont scored the winning tally late in the third period as fifth-ranked McGill skated to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Queen's Gaels in OUA men's hockey action at McConnell Arena on Saturday, extending the Redbirds' perfect start to the season. The win was McGill's third straight and improved the team's all-time record against Queen's to 138-57-2 since their first meeting in 1895.

McGill opened the scoring late in the first period when Mathieu Gagnon struck shorthanded at 19:29, assisted by Thomas Belzile and Alexandre Gagnon. Queen's replied midway through the second on a power play goal from Samuel Marburg, with helpers from Ian Lemieux and Colin Holmes, to tie the game 1-1 heading into the third.

The Redbirds sealed the win with two goals in the final three minutes. Dumont broke the deadlock at 17:17, converting feeds from rookie Damen Boose and Xavier Fortin. Then before the Gaels could pull their goalie for an extra attacker, Alexandre Gagnon added insurance at 18:56 off a setup from his brother Mathieu.

Queen's held a 37-28 edge in shots on goal, including a lopsided 23-5 edge n the second period, but had a difficult time solving McGill rookie goaltender Nicolas Ruccia, who made 37 saves for the win. At the other end, Queen's netminder Aidan Spooner made 28 saves in a losing effort.

Special teams proved ineffective for both sides, with McGill going 0-for-5 with the man-advantage, while Queen's was limited to 1-for-5, while allowing the shorthanded goal. 

The Gaels (1-3-0) return to action Oct. 18 at Carleton (1-2-0). The Redbirds (3-0-0) will continue their six-game homestand Sunday (Oct. 12) at 3 p.m. when UQTR (2-1-0) visits McConnell Arena. For anyone planning on attending the Sunday matinee, please note that the University Street entrance to Molson Stadium will be closed due to the set-up for Monday's Alouettes football game. The only access to McConnell Arena will be from the east side, via Fire Station Road, from Avenue du Parc and Avenue Duluth.

Il s'agit de la troisième victoire consécutive de McGill, qui porte son bilan historique contre Queen's à 138-57-2 depuis leur première rencontre en 1895.

McGill a ouvert le score en fin de première période lorsque Mathieu Gagnon a marqué en infériorité numérique à 19:29, assisté par Thomas Belzile et Alexandre Gagnon. Queen's a répliqué au milieu de la deuxième période grâce à un but en avantage numérique de Samuel Marburg, assisté par Ian Lemieux et Colin Holmes, pour égaliser le score à 1-1 avant d'entamer la troisième période.

Les Redbirds ont scellé la victoire avec deux buts dans les trois dernières minutes. Dumont a brisé l'égalité à 17:17, convertissant les passes du rookie Damen Boose et de Xavier Fortin. Puis, avant que les Gaels ne puissent retirer leur gardien pour ajouter un attaquant supplémentaire, Alexandre Gagnon a ajouté un but d'assurance à 18:56, sur une passe de son frère Mathieu.

Queen's a dominé 37-28 au chapitre des tirs au but, dont 23-5 au deuxième tiers, mais a eu du mal à déjouer le gardien recrue de McGill, Nicolas Ruccia, qui a réalisé 37 arrêts pour remporter la victoire. À l'autre bout de la patinoire, le gardien de Queen's, Aidan Spooner, a effectué 28 arrêts dans une cause perdue.

Les unités spéciales se sont avérées inefficaces pour les deux équipes, McGill n'ayant marqué aucun but en cinq occasions en supériorité numérique, tandis que Queen's n'en a marqué qu'un en cinq occasions, tout en accordant un but en infériorité numérique.

Pour ceux qui prévoient assister à la matinée de dimanche, veuillez noter que l'entrée de la rue Université au stade Molson sera fermée en raison de l'installation pour le match de football des Alouettes de lundi. Le seul accès à l'aréna McConnell se fera par le côté est, via la chemin d'incendie (Quartier général du Service de la sécurité incendie), depuis l'avenue du Parc et l'avenue Duluth.
