Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Stingers streak extended after squeaker over hockey Martlets

MONTREAL – A power-play goal by blueliner Leonie Philbert at 10:22 of the second period held up as No. 1 ranked Concordia held on for a 2-1 victory over visiting McGill in women's hockey at the Ed Meagher Arena, Friday.

The defending national champions improved their perfect record to 12-0-0 atop the RSEQ conference, while the Martlets dropped to 2-11-0.

All three goals in the contest were scored by defencemen and on the power-play. Concordia, which had a 41-16 advantage in shots, went 2-for-5 with the extra attacker, while McGill was 1-for-6.

ConU netted the only goal of the first period, with Camille Richard finding the net at 16:32. Philbert tallied the only marker of the middle stanza. Rearguard Elizabeth Mura of Calgary, scored McGill's lone marker at 7:31 of the third period, assisted by Olivia Pridham and India Benoit. It was the first of the season for Mura, the team captain and a management senior who now has a 6-22-28 career record in 106 games overall.

Goaltender Arianne Leblanc stopped 18 of 19 shots for the win, while Jade Rivard-Coulombe kicked aside 29 of 31 shots in a losing cause.

The Stingers have nine games remaining in their bid to post the conference's second straight undefeated season after going 25-0-0 last year. It marked the Quebec league's first unblemished campaign since McGill went 20-0-0 in 2009-10. Including two league wins at the end of the 2022-23  season, Concordia has a 39-game win streak in regular season play but has a long way to go before catching the national record of 107 consecutive victories in conference play posted by McGill between 2006 and 2011.

The Stingers have won all five meetings with McGill, with four of them being extremely close scores: 3-1, 3-0, 2-0, 7-1 and 2-1. The Martlets are scheduled to have two more chances to knock off the division leaders, on Feb. 9 at Place Bell in Laval, Que., and at the Ed Meagher Arena on Feb. 16.

The Stingers will put their lengthy win streak on the line again when they host Bishop's (6-5-2) on Jan. 23. McGill now will turn its focus on an upcoming home-and-home series with the Montreal Carabins (5-5-2): at the CEPSUM Arena on Jan. 24 and at the Place Bell Community Rink on Jan. 26.
