Megan Kronwald scored the game-winner midway through the second period and goaltender
Jade Rivard-Coulombe sparkled with 31 saves as visiting McGill stunned the Montreal Carabins 2-1 in women's university hockey, Friday, at Arena CEPSUM.
The result halted a three-game slide for the Martlets, who improved to 3-10-1 with all three victories at the expense of the Carabins, who dropped to 5-7-2. McGill has taken three of five confrontations with their archrivals with two meetings remaining, as the Martlets improved their lifetime head-to-head series record to 63-40-0 overall.
Syrine Kacem tallied the only goal of the first period, converting a pass from
Anika Cormier. McGill doubled its lead in the second stanza when Kronwald took a pass from
Taylor Garcia and found the back of the net at the 8:55 mark.
It was the second game-winning tally of the season for Kronwell, who improved her career totals to 6-8-14 in 49 games overall.
The Carabins finally responded at 19:30 of the middle frame when
Anne-Sophie Bedard connected on a power-play to spoil the shutout bid by Rivard-Coulomb.
McGill had a 34-32 edge in shots, including a 9-3 margin in the opening frame. The Carabins went 1-for-3 on the power-play while the Martlets wnt 0-for-2.
Maude Desroches made 29 saves in a losing cause for the Carabins, who pulled her for an extra attacker with 2:34 remaining.
The inner-city rivals will meet again on Sunday (Jan. 26) in a 3:30 p.m. faceoff at the Place Bell community arena.
