MONTREAL – Distance runner
Nolan Turgeon led the Université de Sherbrooke to the individual and team titles to prevail atop the men's division at the McGill Invitational cross-country running meet at Mt. Royal Park, Saturday.
Devin Chapple won bronze to pace the Redbirds to finish second of nine schools overall. Sherbrooke finished atop the standings by placing runners in first, second, sixth, 10th and 19th, to score a meet-best 38 points. They were followed by McGill (40), Laval (71), the Montreal Carabins (79), ETS (149), UQAM (168), UQAC (205), Concordia (240) and College Militaire Royale at St-Jean (247).
Turgeon finished first of 99 men to complete the six-kilometre course in 19 minutes, two seconds. Teammate
Vincent Troullier (19:09) and McGill's
Devin Chapple (19:12) rounded out the podium.
It was the first-ever podium finish at the university level for Chapple, a 21-year-old finance senior from Toronto.
Other scorers for the Redbirds included
Luca Messenger-Jones, an exchange student from the University of Edinburgh, who finished fifth, crossing the line in 19:21. Sophomore
Samuel Hepworth of Montreal was seventh (19:29), followed by junior
Jerome Jacques (13th; 19:43) of St. Lambert, Que., and senior
Jack Stanley (14th; 19:43), a doctorate student from Victoria, B.C.
Next on the agenda is the Carleton Invitational meet in Ottawa on Sept. 28.
