MONTREAL –
Elisa Tripotin, a distance runner from UQAM, won the individual race honours but McGill University captured the battle by finishing first of six schools to claim the women's division at the McGill Invitational cross-country running meet at Mt. Royal Park, Saturday, on the eastern flank of the mountain just north of the downtown campus.
It was the first home-field win for the Martlets since 2019 and their ninth McGill Invitational title in 31 seasons overall. They placed runners in third, fifth, ninth, 12th and 14th, to score a meet-best 43 points. Sherbrooke was second (57), followed by Laval (66), UQAC (111), UQAM (113) and the Montreal Carabins (128).
Tripotin finished first of 64 women to complete the six-kilometre course in 22 minutes, six seconds. Laval's
Sara-Pier Paquet (22:10) and McGill's
Sophie Courville (22:44) rounded out the podium.
It was the second-ever podium finish at the university level for Courville, a 21-year-old science junior from Montreal, majoring in physiology and mathematics.
Other scorers for McGill included sophomore
Sienna Matheson (fifth; 22:54) of Kingston, Ont., freshman Abene Glasgow (ninth; 23:33) of Toronto, junior
Zoe Gardiner (12th; 23:48) of Ottawa, and
Claire Brillon (14th; 23:52), a first-year graduate student who previously competed as a rower for UBC.
The next meet is the Carleton Invitational in Ottawa on Sept. 28.
