Symon says: "I'll take a hat for three" as Redbirds win game of double jeapordy over Gee-Gees

MONTREAL – Mark Symon of New Canaan, Conn., scored five points, including a hat-trick, and was one of 10 different players to find the net for McGill as the Redbirds extended their win streak to six with an easy 16-7 victory over Ottawa in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association action, Saturday, at Percival Molson Stadium.

The result improved McGill's unblemished record to 6-0 in the CUFLA East and the Redbirds remain one of just two undefeated teams, alongside Guelph (4-0), in the 14-team league. Ottawa dropped to 0-6 and McGill is now owns an 18-1 lifetime record against the Gee-Gees, outscoring them by a 243-99 margin.

It was a testy affair, with Ottawa taking 13 of the 22 penalties called. McGill, which had a 40-20 advantage in shots on net, led 6-0 after the opening quarter, 10-2 at halftime and 13-5 after three. The final stanza was a 3-3 saw-off.

Symon, a third-year attackman, scored McGill's second goal before the game was two minutes old. He then put his troops ahead 4-0 in the eighth minute and completed his hat-trick just 95 seconds into the second quarter, upping the count to 7-0.

Redbirds rookie Zach Bye, the team's new-found scoring ace from Greenwich, Conn., also registered a five-point soiree, with two goals and three assists. The 6-foot-2 attackman now tops the CUFLA scoring race with 27 points, including a league-high 20 goals, in just six games.

Bye was one of four Redbirds to tally two goals apiece, a group that included Owen Howard, John Miraglia and Charles Larochelle. Singles went to Henry Fowler, Luke Dawick, Alexander Cowgill, Torsten Blodgett and Alex Erbstein.

Larochelle and Fowler, both of them rookies, each notched their first career markers for the Redbirds.

"Its always fun to see some guys who have never played at this level get their first minutes of playing time and see them compete and excel on the field," said McGill head coach Nicolas Soubry, who made liberal substitutions to his lineup in the second half. "Its one one thing to practice every day and see their confidence and skill level. But its another level to see them perform in a game and prove it to show that they have earned a spot on a team that is at the top of the league standings."

Samuel Ouellette paced the Gaiters with a pair of goals, while singles went to Julien Belair, Aidan Parker, Sean Kennedy, Landen Sinfield and Zachary Moen.

Redbirds goalkeeper Sebastien Elie collected the win, saving 12 of 18 shots in 55 minutes of play. Reserve netminder Sol Chung saw his first official duty at the varsity level. He played the final five minutes and stopped one of two shots.

Finn Harapiak went the distance in nets for Ottawa and made 24 saves in a losing cause.

Up next for McGill (6-0) will be the team's third annual Legacy Game, against the visiting Carleton Ravens (3-3) on Truth and Reconciliation Day. The event is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start on Monday (Sept. 30) at Percival Molson Stadium.
