Marelich hits walk-off single and Press collects four RBIs as Redbirds gallop past Mustangs

COTE ST. LUC, QUE – Brad Marelich hit a game-winning walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh and Jonas Press collected four RBIs as McGill rallied for a chaotic 9-8 victory  over the visiting Central Maine Community College to salvage a split in exhibition baseball at Gary Carter Field, Saturday.

The Mustangs took the opener 5-2 and McGill appeared to be in full control of the nightcap... until they weren't.

The Redbirds led 2-0 after the first inning, 5-1 after two and 7-2 after three. Central Maine clawed back with runs in four consecutive innings and narrowed the deficit to 7-5 in the fifth. McGill added an insurance run in the sixth but the Mustangs rallied with three in their final at bats to force an 8-8 stalemate..

The Redbirds responded quickly, however, in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, freshman Samuel Walsh bunted and reached base on an error by Owen Scott, the pitcher. Fifth-year senior Brandon Kim walked, advancing Walsh, the potential winning run, to second base and Marelich promptly smacked the first pitch for a line drive RBI single to centrefield. It was McGill's third walk-off-the-field victory this season.

Marelich, McGill's electric shortstop and leadoff batter, finished with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. The fifth-year economics senior from Pasadena, Calif., scored twice and walked once. In 17 games overall, he leads the team in a plethora of offensive categories, including.batting average (417), hits (25), RBIs (18) and runs scored (18). He is also a perfect 9-for-9 in base-stealing.

Other key offensive contributions to the victory came from first baseman Jonas Press (2-for-2, one walk, four RBIs, one run) and centefielder Jett Jarvis (1-for-2, a pair of walks, three RBIs, one run)

McGill closer Alastair Mitchell was credited with the win after struggling in the last inning. He was one of four pitchers deployed by the Redbirds, including starter Henri Boudreau, who lasted four innings.

Scott took the loss for the visitors in relief of starter Logan Carpenter.

The Redbirds improved to 10-8 overall, including a 7-4 record in the Quebec University Baseball League. they will close out the regular season on Monday (Sept. 30) with a make-up date for a postponed game with the last-place Montreal Carabins (1-10), whose only win came at the expense of the Redbirds, an 8-5 decision on Sept. 4. . Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Gary Carter Field.
