OTTAWA –
Devin Chapple finished fifth of 115 distance runners, helping the McGill University men's cross-country team to a second-place finish at the 10th annual Capital Challenge, an open meet hosted by Carleton at Mooney Bay Park, Saturday.
Laval runners swept the podium and also grabbed the eighth and tenth-place spots to capture the eight-team men's division standings with 24 points. McGill was next with 33, followed by Queen's (86), Montreal (107), UQAC (154), UQTR (164), Ottawa (193) and RMC (277).
Philippe Morneau-Cartier of the Rouge et Or posted a gold-meal finish, completing the six-kilometre circuit in 18 minutes, 14 seconds. Teammates
Rudy Sall (18:53) and
William Nolet (18:58) took the silver and bronze medal spots.
Chapple, a 21-year-old finance senior from Toronto, led the McGill Redbirds, crossing the finish line in 18:59, some six seconds shy of a podium finish. Other McGillians in the scoring included sophomore
Samuel Hepworth (19:02) of Montreal,
Luca Messenger-Jones (19:06), a first-year exchange student from the University of Edinburgh, senior
Jack Stanley (19:08) of Victoria, B.C., and sophomore
Sean Adams (19:17), an American from State College, Penn.
The next meet of the fall season will the Laval Invitational in Quebec City on Oct. 5.
