OTTAWA – Distance runner
Sophie Courville won gold and teammate
Sienna Matheson collected silver, pacing the McGill University women's cross-country team to a first-place finish at the 10th annual Capital Challenge, an open meet hosted by Carleton at Mooney Bay Park, Saturday.
It was the first-ever race victory at the university level for Courville, a 5-foot-7 native of Montreal, who previously won bronze at the last two McGill Invitational meets (2023 and 2024). The 21-year-old physiology junior finished first of 89 entries, completing the six-kilometre course in 22 minutes, 32 seconds. She was five seconds ahead of Matheson, a chemistry sophomore from Kingston, Ont. Rounding out the podium was
Lauren Lowther from Queen's, who posted a third-place finish in 22:43.
The Martlets were first of seven schools in the women's team scoring with 42 points, based on their top five runners, who finished first, second, 12th, 13th and 14th. Queen's placed second with 51 points, followed by Laval (54), Montreal (76), UQTR (132), UQAC (166) and Ottawa (187).
Other scorers among the Martlets top five were senior
Sophie Rashid-Cocker (12th, 2:33) of Toronto, junior
Chloe Desjardins (13th, 23:35) of Montreal and
Claire Brillon (14th, 23:42), also a Montrealer, and a first-year doctorate student in music.
The third meet of the season is the Laval Invitational in Quebec City on Oct. 5.
