Renaud tallies twice as soccer Martlets triple Stingers

MONTREAL – Sniper Chloe Renaud of St. Hubert, Que., scored twice leading McGill to a 3-1 victory over Concordia in RSEQ women's university soccer action at Percival Molson Stadium, Friday. The Martlets wore their pink uniforms as part of their annual game for breast cancer awareness.

The result halted an 0-1-2 winless streak for the Martlets, who improved their second place standing to 5-1-2 and closed the gap to four points behind the division-leading Montreal Carabins (7-1-0) with six games remaining before playoffs. McGill extended its streak against Concordia to 2-0-1 and 6-1-2 in the last nine confrontations.

"We struggled to win over the last couple of weeks but had been playing well for the most part," said McGill head coach Jose-Luis Valdes."So it was good to see our players rewarded with a win after playing a good game. We scored early, created dangerous scoring chances and played our style. We gave up a goal in the last minute of the first half, which can sometimes throw a team off its game. But our group in the locker room was very composed and confident that it was a one-off and we closed out the game well in the second half."

Renaud netted the opening goal in the ninth minute of play, then added an insurance marker in the 49th minute to put McGill ahead 3-1. After scoring only twice all of last season, the 21-year-old psychology junior upped her league-leading tally to nine goals in eight games, the highest Martlets total since 2015 when Audrey-Ann Coughlan netted 11 in 13 contests. The team's single-season record was set by Julia Maughan in 1995, with 19 markers in 12 league contests. Ranked second in the team's record books is Eva Melamed with 16 goals in 10 games during the 2001 campaign. Both are McGill Sports Hall of Fame inductees.

Alexandra Hughes-Goyette, a master's student who hails from Squamish, B.C., was credited with the winning goal when she put the Martlets ahead 2-0 in the 42nd minute. Concordia responded just three minutes later when Elisa Sandiford connected in injury time, reducing the deficit to 2-1.

McGill held an 8-7 margin in attempted shots, including a 5-2 tally on target.

Goalkeeper Sophie Guilmette of Ahuntsic, Que., made one save and was credited with the win, while Concordia's Rosalie Girouard made two saves and took the loss.

Both teams return to the pitch on Sunday (Sept. 29) for a 3:30 p.m. matinee, with Concordia (1-6-1) at sixth-place UQTR (3-4-1) and McGill (5-1-2) at fifth-place UQAM (3-4-1).
