MONTREAL –
Mujtaba Mirhasan of Carignan, Que., scored in injury time as McGill stunned Concordia with a 1-0 decision in men's university soccer, Friday, at Percival Molson Stadium.
The result narrowed the gap to one point between the cross-town rivals in the RSEQ standings. The second-place Stingers have a 4-2-1 record, followed closely by McGill at 3-1-3. The Redbirds, however, have a tough schedule ahead with five games remaining, all on the road.
It marked McGill's third consecutive shutout and the second straight for goalkeeper
Ludovyk Ciociola who was called upon to make just one save for the win. McGill had a 15-6 margin in attempted shots, including a 4-1 edge on target.
The winning tally was a masterpiece of artwork, painted by the Redbirds quick transition game. Seconds shy of the 90-minute mark, Concordia was awarded a free kick from the left sideline, near the 39-yard mark. A high arcing shot made its way into the right side of the box, where
Razvan Ungureanu received the ball with his right foot and fired a shot from a sharp angle off the right-side of the crossbar.
The shot rebounded into the middle and eventually McGill midfielder
Yannick Laurent recovered the loose ball around the 10-yard line along the far left sideline. He spun around a hammered a Hail Mary pass that found midfielder
Nassim Kemel at midfield. Kemel outran a Concordia defender and worked a 2-on-1 with Mirhasan, passing the ball from 35-yards out which the McGill striker corralled in the middle, near the 25 yard line. He then out-manoeuvered two Concordia defenders and fired a left-footed chip shot past charging keeper
Jordy Kerlegrand, who ended up with three saves in a losing cause.
It was the third goal of the season for Mirhasan, a dominating 6-foot-5, 180-pound software engineering major who transferred to McGill this year after playing three seasons with the NCAA's Vermont Catamounts. He leads the Redbirds in scoring and ks third among RSEQ goal scorers.
The McGill coaching staff and team captain
Yannick Laurent all wore a rainbow-coloured armband in recognition the team's annual Pride Game.
Concordia will play at fifth-place UQTR (2-3-1) on Sunday (Sept. 29).
McGill, meanwhile, will now be tasked with playing out their schedule on the road, with games at UQAM (Sept. 29), Laval (Oct. 6), Montreal (Oct. 11), Concordia (Oct. 18) and UQTR (Oct. 20). The top four finishers in the seven-team league will qualify for post-season play, which is slated to begin on Oct. 25.
