Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Terrorizing Toronto twins team-up to take testy tilt

TORONTO – Taylor Delahey of Markham, Ont., scored twice and her twin sister Ashley Delahey, added three assists as the Toronto Varsity Blues skated to a 3-1 victory over visiting McGill in women's preseason hockey at Varsity Arena, Thursday.

The result marked McGill's second consecutive loss to U of T since a nine-game win streak against was halted in 2022. These long-time rivals first started playing each other more than a century ago, in 1922. In the post-war era, the Martlets are 15-6-0 against the Varsity Blues, outscoring them 57-23.

McGill had a 29-19 edge in shots but couldn't finish and went 0-for-3 on the power-play. The Varsity Blues, who went 1-for-2 on special teams,  led 1-0 after the opening period when rearguard Emma Potter of Angus Ont., connected only 84 seconds after the initial faceoff.

Catherine Foulem, a transfer from Boston University who hails from Dieppe, N.B., replied for McGill at 5:36 of the middle frame, assisted by Elizabeth Mura, to create a stalemate heading into the intermission.

Taylor Delahey then tallied twice midway through the third period. The commerce sophomore connected with the game-winner on a power-play at 10:47 and potted the insurance marker at 14:33.

U of T rookie netminder Lyla McKinnon of Toronto, made 28 saves for the win. Martlets goaltender Sophie Lajeunesse, a junior from Calgary, registered 16 saves and was charged with the loss.

The result improved Toronto's record to 2-1 in non-conference play, while McGill dropped to 1-1. The Martlets have a day off before facing Toronto Metropolitan University, more commonly known as "TMU", at the Mattamy Athletics Centre on Saturday at 1 p.m. McGill will also play at York on Sunday at 1:15 p.m. before making a six-hour bus trip back to Montreal. The Varsity Blues have a week off before heading to the north end of town to confront York on Sept. 27.
