Garcia hits daily double as hockey Martlets get Bold, extend win streak to two

TORONTO – Taylor Garcia scored twice and Catherine Foulem added three assists as McGill quadrupled the Toronto Metropolitan University Bold 4-1 in women's hockey preseason play at the Mattamy Athletics Centre, Saturday.

The result improved lifetime record to 2-1 against TMU, previously known as Ryerson.

The Martlets had a 34-23 edge in shots and went 1-for-4 on the power-play but gave up a shorthanded marker. The Bold was 0-for-2 with an extra attacker. After a scoreless opening period, McGill led 3-0 after the middle stanza and both teams traded goals in the final period.

Garcia, a 19-year-old Arts and Science sophomore majoring in statistics, opened the scoring at 5:29 of the second period, then tallied the final marker of the contest to make it 4-1 at 17:16 of the third period. The two-goal outburst doubled her career totals as the 5-foot-4 forward from Ottawa only had a pair in 32 games overall last season.

Foulem, a transfer from Boston University, assisted on McGill's first, third and fourth goals. She now has a team-leading six points, including one goal, in three contests overall.

Rookie Jordyn Watson of Kingston, Ont., was credited with the game-winner – her first career goal – when she put the Martlets ahead 2-0 at 12:22 of the second. Blake Lavoie, a junior from Victoriaville, Que., added an insurance marker on the power-play at 17:56.

Megan Breen spoiled the shutout bid by Jade Rivard-Coulombe with a shorthanded tally at 6:37 of third period. The sophomore netminder from Chateauguay, Que., ended up with 22 saves and recorded the victory.

TMU's Alexia Stratos made 30 saves in a losing cause and took the loss.

The Martlets, who improved to 2-1 in preseason play, will conclude their three-game excursion to Toronto against York on Sunday in a 1:15 p.m. matinee at the Canlan Sports Arena.

TMU dropped to 1-2 overall, including a 4-2 setback to Bishop's, will host Western in another non-conference game on Sept. 27.
