Good Bye performance highlights Redbirds lacrosse win over Gaels

MONTREAL – Zach Bye scored twice, including the game-winner – and Mark Symon added a pair – as McGill defeated Queen's 8-5 in a Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association game at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.

McGill improved to 2-0, while the Gaels dropped to 1-2. The Redbirds, who had a lopsided 32-12 edge in shots, bounced back from an early 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead after the opening quarter. They held a vise-grip 6-2 advantage at halftime and 8-3 after three quarters. Queen's took seven of the 11 penalties called.

"We gained control early on and were in the driver's seat, so that gave us an opportunity to test some new players in the second half," said McGill head coach Nicolas Soubry. "It was a good game for us. Our whole team played well together. We had a lot of offensive chances  and I thought that Queen's made a lot of mistakes trying to get the ball out of their end, which helped us to stay on offence and work some kinks out in our (structure). That wore their defensive players out and enabled us to get more scoring chances."

Bye, a 20-year-old Arts freshman from Greenwich, Conn., tied the game at 1-1 in the first stanza, then made it 6-2 late in the second quarter.

Rounding out the scoring for McGill was Torsten Blodgett, Preston Norris, Luke Dawick and John Miraglia.

Reed Allen scored a hat-trick in a losing cause for the Gaels. Other marksmen for the visitors were Noah Millsap and Owen Guest.

Starting goaltender Sebastien Elie registered the win with five saves on eight shots over the first three quarters. He was relieved for the final 15 minutes by rookie Henry Komosa, who kicked aside two of four shots.

For the Gaels, Ryan Gemus was credited with 24 saves on 32 shots and took the loss.

McGill will put a two-game win streak on the line when the Redbirds play at Carleton (1-1) on Sunday (Sept. 15) at 2 pm. At the same time, Queen's (1-2) will play at Bishop's (1-3).
