Renaud scores again and Honeybone nets winner as Martlets extend streak over Gaiters to 64

LENNOXVILLE, QUE – Chloe Renaud extended her goal-scoring streak to four consecutive games and Poppy Honeybone netted the winning tally as top-seeded McGill doubled Bishop's 2-1 in women's soccer at Coulter Field, Friday.

The result extended McGill's lifetime undefeated record against Bishop's to 60-0-4 since the Gaiters joined the league in 1992.

McGill had a 12-1 edge in attempted shots, including an 8-1 margin on target against sixth-place BU, which dropped to 0-1-3.

Meanwhile, the unranked Martlets improved their unblemished division-leading record to 4-0-0, the team's longest win streak since posting four straight victories late in the 2019 campaign. This is the best start to a season for the Martlets since 2012 when they won their first six games en route to a 9-3-2 third-place finish. The team's longest undefeated streak in the Quebec league was a 7-0-2 sequence in the 2013 season.

Renaud, a polished striker from St. Hubert, Que., opened the scoring on a penalty kick in the 17th minute of play. It was a league-leading fifth of the season for the psychology junior.

Honeybone, a biochemistry sophomore from Seattle, Wash., snapped a 1-1 deadlock in the 68th minute of play and McGill, the league's top defensive club, smothered the Gaiters the rest of the way.

BU had battled back to knot the score just seconds before the halftime whistle when Teagan Handley fired a high arcing shot to spoil the shutout bid by goalkeeper Sophie Guilmette, who was credited with a win but no saves. It was the first goal conceded of the season by the Martlets, who have outscored opponents 10-1 in four contests.

"Although we had a territorial advantage, Bishop's kept the score close and made us work until the final whistle," said McGill head coach Jose-Luis Valdes. "They kept pressing and wouldn't let up. It was quite impressive how hard they played. That forced (midfieders)  Elisabeth Pronovost and Mara Bouchard to run after a lot of loose balls to make sure they would not be able to counter-attack effectively."

Pronovost, who hails from Chambly, Que., received player-of-the-game honours for McGill, while the Gaiters laureates went to goalkeeper Stephanie Brooks, who collected four saves on six shots and was charged with the loss.

There was only one card issued in the game, a yellow to BU's Kate Smyth late in the second half.

Bishop's (0-1-3) returns to the pitch on Sunday, when they travel to UQAM (2-2-0).

McGill (4-0-0) will now prepare for a highly-anticipated rendezvous with second-place Laval (2-0-2) in a Sunday (Sept. 15) afternoon matinee at Percival Molson Stadium. Kickoff is slated for a 3:30 pm kickoff,  following the men's 1 p.m. start.  The Martlets will be looking for its first home-field conquest over Laval in five years, dating back to a 2-1 decision on Oct. 20, 2019. The event will also be celebrating McGill's Women in Sport initiative, sponsored by Restaurant Poulet Rouge and Kiehl's, which will be offering free skin-care products to fans.
