Gaiters get win over pesky hockey Martlets in penalty-filled contest

LENNOXVILLE, QUE – Rearguards Maude Pepin and Gabrielle Santerre combined for two goals as Bishop's hockey skated to a 3-1 victory over visiting McGill in women's hockey, Saturday, at the Jane and John Molson Arena.

After a scoreless opening period, Bishop's led 1-0 after the second stanza and added a pair, including an empty-netter in the final period. The injury-riddled Martlets dressed only 18 skaters, two below the norm.

It was a penalty-filled affair as the two teams combined for 12 infractions. McGill, which was flagged for 16 of the 24 minutes assessed by the officials, matched its highest PIM total for the season, a feat that they previously managed in a loss to Ottawa (Oct. 26) and to Boston (Sept. 30). The Gaiters went 2-for-7 on the power-play, while McGill was 1-for-3.

Justine Turcotte scored what proved to be the winning tally when she connected on a power-play at 8:35 of the third to put BU ahead 2-0.

Mika Chang, a bio-engineering junior from Toronto, tallied the lone McGill marker, her third of the season, on a power-play, narrowing the gap to 2-1 midway through the third frame.

Charley Wing started between the pipes for Bishop's and left an unblemished mark at the midway mark of the second period, stopping all 13 shots faced. She was replaced by Faith Miller, who was credited with the win and 13 saves on 14 shots.

McGill's Jade Rivard-Coulombe saved 27 of 29 shots fired her way and took the loss.

The result improved BU's record to 15-7-0 with three games remaining and all but assured the Gaiters of finishing second in the RSEQ conference. They sit six points ahead of third-place Montreal (11-8-2), which hold a game in hand.

The Martlets (4-17-1) has three games remaining, all at home, in the race with Carleton (6-14-1) for fifth place. McGill will host Montreal (Feb. 9), followed by Ottawa (Feb. 11) and Carleton (Feb. 16).
