Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Hockey Martlets fire 37 shots but stymied in cross-town confrontation with Carabins

MONTREAL – Wikona Laloche scored three points and goaltender Maude Desroches posted a 37-save shutout as the Montreal Carabins skated to a 3-0 triumph over McGill in women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday.

This was McGill's fourth straight loss to Montreal since upsetting the Carabins 4-1 on Oct. 20, 2023. The Martlets now own a 60-38-0 record in 98 lifetime meetings against the Carabins.

The result improved third-place Montreal's record to 13-8-2 and kept the Carabins in the race for second as they trail Bishop's (15-8-0) by two points with two games remaining before playoffs. For McGill (4-18-1), it was the team's eighth straight loss.

McGill dominated the shots on goal by a 37-25 margin but couldn't solve the puzzle waiting for them at the offensive end of the rink. The Martlets went 0-for-7 on the power-play, while Montreal was 0-for-2.

Laloche tallied twice and added an assist. She opened the scoring at 8:45 of the first period with what proved to be the game-winner when the puck took a strange bounce that fooled McGill netminder Jade Rivard-Coulombe. Laloche made in 2-0 at 4:15 of the middle frame and 10 minutes later, set up the final goal, scored by Mya Dion.

Rivard-Coulombe saved 22 of 25 shots and took the loss.

Both teams return to action on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 11), with Montreal hosting Bishop's and McGill hosting Ottawa. Both contests will be 2 p.m. matinees.

In the showdown against Ottawa, the Martlets will salute their five graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony, namely team captain Meg Harley and fellow rearguard Lydia MacLellan, plus forwards Quynn Campbell, Stephanie Keeper and Cassidy Stasiuk.

After the Ottawa game, McGill will conclude their season by hosting Carleton on Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.

MARTLETS MURMURS: This marked the team's Black Heritage Game and the Martlets wore specially-designed T-Shirts in their pre-game workout, that had the inscription: "Recognize the struggle, celebrate the contributions, respect the culture".
