Bees sting Martlets to clinch third place in college hoops confrontation

MONTREAL – Areej Burgonio scored 25 points and Serena Tchida registered a double-double as the visiting Concordia Stingers defeated McGill 76-59 in women's basketball to clinch third-place in the RSEQ conference, Saturday, at Love Competition Hall.

With one regular season game left to play, Concordia improved to 6-9 and now sits two points ahead of McGill (5-10), which has now lost seven straight. The Martlets could still tie Concordia for third place but the Stingers hold the head-to-head tie-breaker. The bitter rivals split their four-game series but Concordia outscored the Martlets 247-238.

ConU led 18-15 after the opening quarter, 38-30 at halftime and 67 42 after three quarters. McGill took the final frame 17-9.

Tchida contributed 21 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Stingers.

Freshman Lily Rose Chatila of Quebec City, paced the Martlets with 10 points, while sophomore Daniella Mbengo and freshman Seyna Diggs, both native Montrealers, each added nine. Diggs, the team's leading scorer, fouled out for the first time this season.

Concordia shot 45.6 per cent from the floor (25/56), made five of 16 attempts from three-point range and drained 21 of 27 free-throws. McGill connected on only 34.3 per cent (23/67), went 3-for-17 from downtown and 10-for-20 from the stripe.

The fourth-place Martlets will host undefeated Laval (15-0) in the regular season finale, at Love Competition Hall on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. Laval, which is ranked No. 5 in the national Top 10, has swept the first three meetings by scores of 72-41, 59-43 and 70-44.  The Rouge et Or will be looking to become the first undefeated team in the Quebec league since McGill went 12-0 in 1995-96. The upcoming game will also be a playoff preview as McGill will confront Laval a week later in an RSEQ sudden-death semifinal. It will also mark Seniors Day and the team will pay tribute to three players expected to graduate.
