OSHAWA, ONT
– Ibrahim Chami of the McGill University Redbirds has earned U SPORTS All-Rookie honours in voting announced at the men's soccer All-Canadian awards banquet, Wednesday, on the eve of the national championship in Oshawa.
The Final Eight tournament gets underway Thursday at Vaso's Field on the campus of Ontario Tech University and culminates Sunday with the gold medal game at 2 p.m. Eastern. Fifth-seeded McGill opens the quarter-finals against No.4 Ontario Tech, the host team, on Thursday at 7 p.m. All 11 games from the tourney will be
streamed live on CBC Sports digital platforms in English and on Radio-Canada's digital platforms and
ICTou.tv in French.
National award winners announced during the gala were York midfielders Christian Zeppier (player of the year) andi
Luca Accettola (rookie of the year), Sherbrooke defender
David Harrison (Student-Athlete Community Service Award) and Alberta bench boss
Martin Fenger-Andersen (Fox40 coach of the year).
Chami, a 20-year-old Arts freshman from Laval, Que., merited first team all-star status in the RSEQ conference. He started all 12 regular season contests and played every minute. The 5-foot-10, 166-pound defender was twice-named as his team's player of the game.
"A great player with a lot of skill and a super attitude," says Mounicot. "Ibrahim is very serious when it comes to mental and physical preparation. He's a good student-athlete who acts like a pro player. He's the complete package."
Chami had only one yellow card and no goals but played a key role in helping McGill finish tied for the second-best defensive record in the seven-team Quebec league, where the Redbirds allowed just 11 goals in 12 games. It was the team's fewest total allowed in 13 years, dating back to 2011 when they also conceded 11 goals in a dozen contests. Chami, who has attended several training camps with the Lebanese national program was previously an all-star at the CEGEP level with Champlain College.
