FOOTBALL SEMIFINAL: Carabins dominate Redbirds to advance to Dunsmore Cup final

MONTREAL — Quarterback Jonathan Sénécal threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns as the Université de Montréal Carabins cruised to a 42–3 victory over  McGill in an RSEQ football semifinal on Saturday at CEPSUM Stadium.

Sénécal, the 2023 Vanier Cup champion, completed 29 of 36 passes (80.5%) and was picked off once. He added 55 rushing yards and a touchdown on four carries. Sénécal connected with receiver Iraghi Muganda for a 15-yard TD pass and hooked up with receiver Carl Chabot for a 17-yard TD pass-and-run play in the first quarter. Redval Keita and fullback Mathieu Barsalou also added rushing majors for the Carabins.

McGill's only points came from a 39-yard field-goal by kicker Mario Della Fraine, who also missed from distances of 42 and 46 yards. The visitor's lone bright spot on offence was receiver William Langlais, who snared seven balls for 98 yards.

Redbirds quarterback Éloa Latendresse-Régimbald, who had a standout regular season with over 2,000 passing yards, close to 800 yards on the ground and nine rushing touchdowns, was limited to 184 passing yards (17/28) and 84 rushing yards on 14 carries in the game. He was intercepted three times and sacked six times by a relentless Carabins defence led by defensive end Gabriel Lessard who was credited with five solo tackles.

The Carabins' defence also forced three fumbles and held the Redbirds scoreless in the second half. Interceptions were recorded by Louis-Philippe Gauthier, Nicolas Roy, and Samuel Leduc.

With the win, Montréal advances to the league's Dunsmore Cup final for the 11th consecutive season, where they will face Laval next Saturday at Stade TELUS in Quebec City. The two teams split their regular-season meetings, each winning by a single point.

McGill concludes its season with a 3–6 record overall, while the Carabins improved to 8–1 overall.
