MONTREAL – Veteran
Rachel Leduc registered 10 points to pace the McGill women's volleyball team as they cruised to a 3-0 sweep over the Piranhas from École de technologie supérieure, Friday. The set scores were 25-18, 25-16 and 25-20.
The victory halted a two-game losing streak for the fifth-place Martlets, who improved to 4-6. ETS dropped to 0-8 and sit last in the eight team RSEQ conference. The Piranhas have officially joined the league this year after playing an exhibition schedule last season.
Rookies
Sandrine Methot and
Emma Waskiewicz each added nine points, with the latter contributing 14 digs on defence.
For ETS,
Iman Assameur paced the attack with 15 points, including 13 kills.
This matchup provided head coach
Rachele Beliveau an opportunity to play with her lineup. She rested a few starters, elevated freshman
Justine Veillette into the roster from the Martlets development program, and gave some much-needed playing time to rookies
Romane Daigle,
Callie Taylor and
Maria Ubeda, among others.
"We tried to implement some new things in the game that we have been working on in practice," said Beliveau. "It was the type of game that was actually difficult to play because it was not at the same speed that we are used to, so we needed to make a lot of adjustments with footwork and agility. It was tougher to read the play as it was not as clean a style of volleyball. So we needed to be fast and alert, even though the game was slower. That's sounds strange to say but it was more of an agility game than our typical power game."
ETS (0-8) returns to the court on Sunday (Nov. 17) when the host division-leading Sherbrooke (8-0). McGill (4-6) has a rare weekend off and will play again on Nov. 22, when the Martlets travel to Quebec City to confront third-place Laval (5-2).
