MONTREAL –
Gabriel Proulx scored twice, including a shorthanded goal, as third-ranked Concordia skated to a 7-3 decision over No.5 McGill to capture the 37th annual Ronald Cory Cup rivalry game in OUA men's hockey, Sunday, at the Ed Meagher Arena.
The result improved Concordia's division-leading record to 11-0-1 atop the OUA East, while the injury-plagued Redbirds, which dressed two fewer players than normal, dropped to 5-5-0.
Six different players scored for the Stingers, who led 2-1 after one period and 4-1 after two. They went 1-for-4 on the power-play, while the Redbirds were 1-for-2.
Rounding out the Concordia scoring was defenceman
Sean Larochelle, in addition to forwards
Charles Savoie,
Daniel Agostino,
Julien Anctil and
Isiah Campbell.
McGill goals went to
Stephane Huard, who opened the scoring at 4:15 of the first period,
Charles-Antoine Dumont and
Mathieu Gagnon, whose fifth marker of the season has moved him into a tie with
Brandon Frattaroli for the team lead.
Concordia had a 30-26 edge in shots as goaltender
Nikolas Hurtubise made 22 saves for the win and improved his record to 10-1. Redbirds starter
Alexis Shank was saddled with the loss and stopped 19 of 25 shots including his second penalty shot save in as many games. He was relieved at the 5:18 mark of the third period by
Fabio Iacobo, who was credited with four saves on five shots.
Despite a 27-man roster, McGill could only ice a lineup with 18 players against Concordia as illness and injury has beset the team. Among those, captain
Alexandre Gagnon, who has missed three straight with an undisclosed injury but is expected back next weekend.
The Stingers swept their three-game series against McGill with no additional matchups on tap before playoffs. They also evened the head-to-head series between these foes to
117-117-14 overall in 248 lifetime meetings since the series began in 1975. McGill is now 20-12-3 in the annual rivalry contest for the Corey Cup, while the Stingers are 13-21-3 in Cup play, including a 1-1 record against UQTR. The event is named after the former president of the Montreal Canadiens who donated the trophy in 1988, for an annual challenge game that represents local college hockey supremacy.
Concordia (11-0-1) returns to the ice on Nov. 14 when it travels to Ottawa (6-5-0). McGill (5-5-0) will make a long road trip to southern Ontario, for games at Waterloo (4-6-1) and Brock (5-4-2), Nov. 15-16, respectively.
