MONTREAL –
Alexandra Hughes- Goyette of Squamish, B.C., struck twice, including the game-winning tally in just the 12th minute of play, as McGill overwhelmed Bishop's 4-0 in a women's soccer Seniors Night tribute to the graduating players at Percival Molson Stadium, Friday.
With four games to play, the result improved McGill's second-place record to 6-2-2 in the eight-team RSEQ conference, seven points behind Montreal (9-1-0) and six points ahead of third-place Sherbrooke (4-4-2). The last-place Gaiters dropped to 0-6-4.
It was the Martlets highest shutout win over BU since a 6-0 conquest in 2006 and extended McGill's lifetime undefeated record against Bishop's to 61-0-4 since the Gaiters joined the league in 1992.
Hughes-Goyette, who tallied her third and fourth goals of the season, put McGill ahead 2-0 in 30th minute.
"She's been a consistent starter who has created many scoring opportunities for us over the past two seasons," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes, who made liberal lineup substitutions in the second half. "Today, she was able to create her own space that hat allowed her to get to the net and finish. The first one was a good header off a corner kick and her second goal was a really nice shot from the left side of the box into the top left corner. It was a 1-v-1 play that she has rehearsed in practice and it paid off."
The Martlets took a commanding three goal lead when sniper
Chloe Renaud found the back of the net just two minutes into the second half. It was her league-leading ninth goal in 10 games. She has scored 47.4 per cent of the team's 19 markers this season.
Midfielder
Elisabeth Pronovost concluded the scoring in the 51st minute.
McGill had a 22-4 edge in attempted shots and a 17-4 margin on net, as veteran goalkeeper
Sophie Guilmette (4 saves) shared the shutout with rookie
Cheridan Johnson (0 saves), who came on at halftime. It was the Martlets fifth whitewash in 10 league games this season.
Both teams return to the pitch on Oct. 6, with McGill playing at Laval (3-2-5) at 2:15 p.m., while UQAM (4-5-1) confronts Bishop's at 4 pm.
Prior to the opening whistle, the McGill coaching staff paid tribute to five seniors expected to graduate who were playing in their final regular season home game. The group included the aforementioned
Hughes-Goyette, who transferred to McGill from UNB last year for a master's degree in biochemistry. Also honoured was
Guilmette, who transferred from Vanderbilt two years ago and is completing a master's degree in kinesiology and physical education. Fifth-year fullback
Audrey Moyen graduated with a science degree in 2019, then completed a master's in 2021 and is now finishing a doctorate in human nutrition.
Stephanie Hill, a fifth-year defender, earned a science degree in 2023 and is now completing a master's degree in physical therapy. And finally, team captain
Mara Bouchard, a midfielder from Granby, Que., who is expected to graduate with a bachelor of arts degree, majoring in psychology.
