MONTREAL –
Annabelle Fortin hit six treys and scored a game-high 20 points as the last-place UQAM Citadins surprised McGill for the second time in three days and came away with a 71-62 victory in RSEQ women's basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.
UQAM, which improved to 2-8, now has some light at the end of the tunnel as they look to catch fourth-place Concordia (4-6) for a playoff spot six games remaining. McGill, on the other hand, dropped its fourth in a row and sits third in the RSEQ conference with a 5-7 record, nestled two points behind Bishop's (6-6) and two ahead of Concordia.
The visitors jumped into a insurmountable 28-12 lead after the opening quarter, then didn't win another stanza. McGill took the second frame by a 19-13 margin and the third 16-15. The final quarter was a 15-15 saw-off.
The Citadins had a slightly advantageous 24-22 edge in turnovers but converted that into a glaring 32-18 difference on the scoreboard.
Fortin was one of three UQAM players in double figures, with
Fredlaine Verrier and
Paule Beline-Ibata contributing 12 points apiece.
McGill had three in double digits, led by
Seyna Digs and
Emma-Jane Scotten with 12 apiece, while
Katie Rathwell added 11.
UQAM shot 43.3 per cent from the field (26/60), made 11 of 25 treys and drained eight of 16 from the line. McGill countered with a 33.3 per cent success rate from the floor (22/66), including 9-for-32 from the arc. The Martlets sank nine of 13 from the stripe.
With four games remaining, McGill has three of them against division-leading Laval, which has an unblemished 10-0 record. The Rouge et Or will visit Love Competition Hall on Thursday (Feb. 8) in a 6 p.m. tip-off before the return match in Quebec City on Feb. 10. McGill will then conclude the regular season with home games against Concordia (Feb. 12) and Laval (Feb. 24).
