Rookie Dumont nets winner as hockey Redbirds rally past Stingers in testy preseason affair

MONTREAL – Freshman Charles-Antoine Dumont of Levis, Que., snapped a stalemate with the winning goal in the final period as McGill rallied with a pair of goals in the final 29 minutes for a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Concordia in a spirited preseason men's hockey game at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

It was the first meeting between these crosstown rivals since Concordia swept McGill 2-0 last spring in OUA East semifinals. The teams own a 113-113-14 lifetime record overall against each other since the Stingers they first crossed paths in 1975.

Concordia opened the scoring but the cross-town rivals were even at 2-2 after the first period and deadlocked at 3-3 heading into the final stanza. The game featured numerous skirmishes and a combined 16 penalties but both teams put aside the truculence and showed respectful sportsmanship during the post-game handshakes. The Stingers went 0-for7 on the power-play, while McGill was 0-for-2.

Brandon Frattaroli of Pierrefonds, Que., registered his third of the preseason for the home side. Other Redbirds marksmen included sophomore William Rouleau of St. Basile de Portneuf, Que., and rookie Xavier Fortin Concordia goals came from the sticks of  of Mirabel, Que. Emile Hagerty-Aubin, Samuel Degroseilliers and Charles-Antoine Paiement.

McGill had a 33-28 edge in shots as goaltender Alexis Shank, a junior from Laval, Que., made 25 saves for the win. Concordia's Jordan Naylor collected 29 saves and took the loss.

The two teams will tango in the OUA regular season opener at McConnell Arena on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. But before then, McGill will put their 3-1 preseason record against archrival UQTR in a final tune-up game on Sunday (Oct. 1) at 4 p.m. The Redbirds opened their exhibition schedule with a 4-3 victory in Trois-Rivieres on Sept. 15.
