MONTREAL – Medal hopefuls
Matthew Beaudet and
Donna Ntambue are among four men and six women slated to compete for McGill University at the U SPORTS indoor track and field championships in Saskatoon, March 9-11.
The three-day meet, hosted by the University of Saskatchewan for the fourth time overall, but the first since 2006, runs from Thursday to Saturday at the Saskatoon Fieldhouse. Live streaming of the event is available on CBC's digital platforms (English) and
usports.ca (French). The major awards luncheon gala is scheduled for Thursday.
Beaudet, an electrical engineering junior from Montreal's NDG borough, is considered by
Trackie.ca as the favourite in the men's 1,500-metre race with a season-best time of 3:39.38 and is seeded fourth in the 3,000m (7:59.08), based on meets run at a longer distance in Boston. At the RSEQ conference championships two weeks ago, he won gold medals in both events, as well as in the 4x800 relay. A week before that meet, he helped guide Canada to an eighth-place finish at the world cross-country championships in Australia.
Ntambue, an NCAA transfer and first-year economics major from Montreal, is seeded third in the women's 60-metre sprint, based on her McGill record time of 7.38 seconds. She is also scheduled to compete in the 4x200 relay, where McGill is seeded eighth with their season-best time of 1:41.18.
Other McGill men joining Beaudet at Nationals include the remaining members of the 4x800 relay squad, a group that includes
Sebastian Danson, a computer science senior from Toronto in the leadoff spot, followed by De Paul University transfer
Jules Gueguen, an economics major who hails from France, and
Markus Geiger, a management junior from Toronto.
Teammates from the McGill women joining Ntambue include other members of the gold medal-winning 4x200 relay, which features a pair of sophomores from Vancouver,
Lola Ross-McLennan (industrial relations) and
Bethany Walton-Knight (physics), along with
Vanessa Lu Langley, a chemical engineering junior from Ottawa.
McGill's other gold medal qualifiers from the RSEQ championship feature pole vaulter
Rosalie Lupien, an economics junior from Longueuil, Que., and weight-throw specialist
Ella Villeneuve, a science freshman from Richmond, Vt.
