Olivier Gregoire and
Mackenzie Stathis each posted gold medal performances as the McGill men's track and field team finished second at the Laval Invitational meet, Saturday.
This was the first event on the brand-new Mondo surface at the Centre PEPS and the host Laval Rouge et Or swept both the men's and women's divisions.
On the men's side, the defending conference champion Rouge et Or scored 187 points, to finish first of eight universities. McGill, which was missing star distance runner
Matthew Beaudet, won two gold medals, three silvers and a pair of bronzes. The Redbirds placed second overall with 89 points, followed by Montreal (63), UQAC (35), ETS (31), Sherbrooke (25), UQAM (12) and UQTR (8).
Three members of the Redbirds scored 10 points apiece to account for 30 of the team's 89 points at the meet.
Gregoire, a 5-foot-8 sophomore from St. Aubert, Que., tallied his by winning the pole vault competition,. An Arts & Science sophomore majoring in sociology and sustainability, Gregoire cleared a height of 4.20 metres, which put him ahead of Laval's
Gabriel Pelletier, the silver-medalist who jumped 4.10.
Stathis, a 6-foot-2 jumps specialist from Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Que., won gold in the long jump. The computer science junior registered a meet-best distance of 6.29m, which edged out teammate
Alex Crooks, who registered a silver-medal winning leap of 6.22.
McGill's other leading scorer was
Kilty McGonigal, a 5-foot-11 multi-events specialist from Deux Montagnes , Que., who registered eight of his 10 points with a silver-medal finish in the 60m hurdles. The civil engineering sophomore was clocked at 9.11 seconds, which ranked second to the time of 8.80 posted by Laval's
Mathis Laganiere.. McGonigal also collected two points in the shot put, finishing seventh overall with a toss of 10.32m.
One meet remains for athletes to qualify for Nationals before the RSEQ conference championships, which will be hosted by McGill, Feb. 24-25. Before then, the Carleton Last Chance Meet is a two-day event slated for Feb. 17-18 in Ottawa.
