MONTREAL – Florence Poirier hit a game-winning trey with 22 seconds remaining and Rowena Blais added a pair of free-throws as Concordia rallied for a 47-43 victory over McGill in women's basketball, Saturday.
 
The game was played before a sell-out crowd of 350 at the John Dore Court, which has a slightly larger capacity but is  under size restrictions due to the waning pandemic.
 
Areej Burgonio led the Stingers with 14 points, while Emma-Jane Scotten paced the Martlets with 12 points and teammate Charlotte Guerin collected eight points along with a game-high 13 rebounds.

In a low-scoring opening quarter, Concordia took a 7-4 lead into the second and held a 17-14 advantage at halftime. The Martlets took the third quarter 14-11 to knot the score at 28-28 but were outscored in the final stanza 19-15, holding the lead until the final 78 seconds of play. Kristy Awikeh drained a pair of free-throws to put McGill ahead 43-42 with 30 seconds remaining but the aforementioned Poirier then made her winning triple on her only basket of the game.

Perhaps the most telling statistic in a close game was at the free-throw line, where Concordia went 11-for-14, while McGill was 8-for-16.
 
The Martlets had the edge in rebounding (40-36) and steals (8-6). Both teams shot only 26 per cent from the floor and both committed 17 turnovers.

The result left McGill and Concordia tied for the fourth and final playoff berth with identical 3-11 records and just two games remaining on the schedule, including a third consecutive meeting, back at the Sir Arthur Currie Gym on Feb. 17.

The Stingers hold a 2-1 edge in the season series but should McGill win the upcoming game, the Martlets would have the next tie-breaker as they will enter the matchup having outscored Concordia 164-152 over their first three meetings. The final playoff berth could also be decided in the regular season finale on Feb. 15, when McGill plays at UQAM (8-5), while Laval (9-5) travels to Concordia.
