Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Penalties prove costly as Gaiters power past hockey Martlets

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Gabriella Goodall of Gloucester, Ont., tallied a pair of third period goals as the Bishop's Gaiters power-play unit took advantage of a plethora of opportunities en route to a 5-2 victory over visiting McGill in women's hockey at the Jane and Eric Molson Arena, Friday.

Things looked promising for the visitors when they left the ice after the first period knotted at 2-2. But a parade to the penalty box proved costly as BU went 3-for-7 on special teams, while the Martlets replied on one of their three power-play chances.

The Gaiters added one goal in the second period and two more in the final stanza.

Team captain Christiana Colizza, originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., paced the Martlets with a goal and one assist. It was her third goal of the regular season and 29th career marker in 157 contests overall.

Freshman Maika Lecavalier of St. Lazare, Que., was the other McGill player to score, with both Colizza and defenceman Elizabeth Mura drawing assists on the play.  It was Lecavalier's first of the regular season and second goal overall, dating back to a preseason contest at Dartmouth on Oct. 9, 2022.

Rounding out the scoring for Bishop's was Maude Pepin and Justine Turcotte in the first period and Avery Amos in the middle frame.

McGill, which had a 20-14 edge in shots after two periods, ran out of steam and were outshot 15-6 in the final stanza.

Sophomore goaltender Charley Wing of Huntsville, Ont., turned aside 24 of 26 shots for the victory, while Martlets freshman Juliette Roy of Candiac, Que., saved 24 of 29 in a losing cause.

The fourth-place Gaiters (11-8-3) will have a quick turnaround, as they host the second-place Montreal Carabins (15-4-4) on Sunday, (Feb. 12).

McGill (2-20-1) has two games remaining on the schedule. The team travels to the nation's capital on Super Bowl Sunday to confront fifth-place Carleton (7-13-3)  in a 3 p.m. matinee, before closing out the campaign on Feb. 17 with a  road game against the Carabins.
