NEW HAVEN, CONN. –
David Chen of Livingston, N.J., scored twice and added an assist as the Yale University Bulldogs skated to a 5-1 victory over visiting McGill in men's exhibition hockey at Ingalls Rink, Saturday.
The result gave Yale a 17-16 record in 33 lifetime meetings with McGill since the series began way back in 1913. McGill now owns a 111-129-10 record in 250 confrontations versus NCAA opponents.
The Bulldogs, who improved to 5-9 overall, feature a roster that includes nine Canadians. McGill, which was playing its first game since Dec. 5, dropped to 14-10 overall.
Yale netted five unanswered goals over the last two periods after the Redbirds opened the scoring at 8:48 of the first stanza when
Zach Gallant, a junior from Oakville, Ont., scored on a breakaway, converting passes from
Alexandre Blanchard and
Adam Pilotte.
Chen, a sophomore, tallied both Yale markers in the second period to give his troops a 2-1 lead after two. He then assisted on senior
Niklas Allain's goal just 29 seconds into the final period. Rookie
David Andreychuk of Chatham, N.J., added an unassisted empty-net goal at 18:32 and
Teddy Wooding, a senior from Wrentham, Mass., rounded out the scoring with 52 seconds remaining in the contest.
The Redbirds outshot Yale 35-28, including a lopsided 20-4 margin in the first period, but had a hard time figuring out netminder
Jack Stark, a 5-foot-10, 165-pound freshman from Chaska, Minn., who registered 34 saves for the victory.
Alexis Shank, a junior from Laval, Que., started between the pipes for McGill and stopped all 10 shots he faced before being removed with a shutout intact at 13:07 of the middle frame. Sophomore
Fabio Iacobo of St. Leonard, Que., was credited with 13 saves on 17 shots and took the loss.
The Redbirds went 0-for-4 on the power-play, while Yale replied on one of five attempts.
Both teams resume league play on Jan. 5, with Yale visiting RPI in Troy, N.Y., while the Redbirds will host Western in a 7 p.m. start.
It will mark McGill's first meeting with the Mustangs since a 2-1 victory in London, Ont., on Oct. 27, 2018. The last time that Western visited McConnell Arena was a 4-2 McGill victory on Jan. 23, 2016. McGill holds a 19-18-3 head-to-head record against Western since they first crossed paths in 1936. Normally a perennial contender, the Mustangs are currently eighth in the 10-team OUA West conference with a 6-11-0 record, including a 6-4 mark in their last 10 games since a dreadful 0-7 start to the season. The Redbirds are ranked No.7 in Canada with an 11-4-2 record. They sit third in the OUA East, one point behind Ottawa (12-4-1) and two in arrears of division-leading UQTR (13-4-0)
