Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Earl Zukerman

Martlets arrest Citadins with key win in college hoops

MONTREAL – A trio of McGill players reached double digits in scoring, leading the Martlets to a 61-52 victory over UQAM, the defending conference champs in women's basketball, Saturday, at Love Competition Hall.

The result halted a three-game losing streak for McGill (3-3) and extended UQAM's losing skid as they dropped to 0-5.

McGill held a slim 11-10 lead after the opening quarter, extended that to 28-22 at halftime and 42-37 after three, then took the final stanza by a 19-15 margin. The Martlets had the upper-hand in rebounding (41-35) and won the turnover battle (20-13).

Long-distance shooter Lily Rose Chatila, a 5-foot-7 shooting guard from Quebec City, paced  McGill with a dozen points, on the strength of a 4-for-13 performance from three-point range. The science freshman added three rebounds, a pair of steals and one assist in 34 minutes of court time.

Emma-Jane Scotten, a senior from Ottawa and Seyna Diggs, a freshman from Montreal, added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Martlets. Both grabbed six rebounds.

The Citadins were led by Paul Beline-Ibata, who registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Teammate Fredlaine Verrier, who played all 40 minutes, contributed 13 points and pulled down nine boards.

McGill shot 29.3 per cent from the field (22/75), went 9-for-44 from the arc and 8-for-11 from the line. The Citadins shot 33.3 per cent (20/60), 6-for-23 and 6-for-9, respectively.

UQAM (0-5) will close out their semester on Dec. 2 with a home game against division-leading Laval (4-0).

McGill, which improved to 7-5 overall, will host the Manitoba Bisons (8-8) in a post-Christmas exhibition game on Dec. 30 at 3 p.m., before resuming regular-season play on Jan. 11 at Concordia.

FACES IN THE CROWD: Spotted among the 417 fans in attendance was Suzanne Fortier, who served as principal and vice-chancellor at McGill from 2013 to 2022. Professor Fortier currently serves as chair of the World Economic Forum's Global University Leaders Forum (GULF).
