Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Earl Zukerman

Redbirds take flight, knock off undefeated Citadins in hoops thriller

MONTREAL – Sean Herscovitch scored a game-high 23 points as McGill stunned division-leading and undefeated UQAM 66-64 in a men's university basketball thriller, at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

The result snapped two streaks in one fell swoop, ending a five-game losing run for McGill (1-5) and putting a halt to UQAM's four-game win sequence as the Citadins tumbled to 4-1.

Combined with a 61-52 McGill victory in the women's game earlier, this was the first doubleheader sweep for McGill basketball since Feb. 9, 2023, when the Red & White defeated Concordia.

The visitors had a chance for the win in the dying seconds but Kevin Civil, who led the Citadins with 15 points, missed a buzzer-beating trey attempt from the top of the arc as time expired.

McGill jumped into an inspired 22-10 lead after the opening quarter and held a precarious 36-30 advantage at halftime. The Redbirds won the third stanza 19-15 but UQAM pushed back to take the final quarter 19-11.

Herscovitch, a 5-foot-9 guard from Montreal, saw 36 minutes of court time. He shot 9-for-19 from the floor, including a 5-for-9 performance from the arc. The 23-year-old political science senior added four rebounds and three assists.

Joshua Soifer, a first-year law student from Regina, Sask., added 16 points for McGill, while freshman Matt Phaneuf of Gatineau, Que., contributed 10 and Cameron Elliot, a senior from Ottawa, had nine.

UQAM had a 27-19 advantage in turnovers and a 38-29 edge in rebounding but didn't shoot as well as McGill.

The Redbirds shot 42.9 per cent from the floor (27/63), drained nine of 22 treys and went 3-for-9 from the free-throw line. By comparison, the Citadins shot 34.3 per cent, made nine of 39 from downtown and connected on nine of 14 from the stripe.

UQAM will close out their semester on Dec. 2 with a home game against Laval (1-3).

McGill is off for the December exam and holiday break. They Redbirds will resuming their schedule in January with a home-and-home series against Concordia. McGill plays the Stingers at the Loyola campus on Jan. 11, then will host their cross-town rivals on Jan. 13.
