Captain Harley snaps shutout sequence but hockey Martlets ruffled by Ravens

MONTREAL – Team captain Meg Harley scored to end a long scoring drought for the McGill women's hockey team but the visiting Carleton Ravens skated to a road 4-1 victory at McConnell Arena, Friday.

Forward Cecelia Lopez tallied twice for the Ravens, who led 2-0 after the opening period, played a scoreless second stanza and took the final period 2-1.  Lopez completed the scoring after breaking out of her defensive zone and banking a perfect shot of the dasher boards near centre ice, which made its way to the vacated net at 16:34 of the last period.

Rounding out the scoring for Carleton was forward Abigail Byrne in the first period and and forward Justina Beard, who gave the Ravens a 3-1 cushion at 6:50 of the final stanza.

Harley, a fifth-year kinesiology senior from Oakville, Ont., broke goaltender Caitlin Whitehead's bid for a shutout with a power-play marker at 28 seconds into the third period. She deflected a point shot from rearguard Olivia Pridham, who had been fed a pass from Mia Giles, another blue-liner. The goal halted a string of 310 minutes and 31 seconds since the last Martlets goal, on Nov. 5, by Giles at 9:57 of the second period against the Montreal Carabins.

McGill had a 25-22 edge in shots but Caitlin recorded 24 saves for the win. Rookie goaltender Jade Rivard-Coulombe kicked aside 18 of 21 shots in a losing cause.

The Martlets went 1-for-3 on the power-play, while Carleton was 0-for-2.

Both teams return to play on Nov. 25 at 7 p.m., with the Ravens (4-7-0) playing at Bishop's (6-5-0).and McGill (2-9-0) heading across town to confront division-leading Concordia (10-0-0).

MARTLET MURMURS: This game was part of the team's Shoebox Project, an initiative that provides aid for at-risk, or homeless, women. The Martlets have been supporting this project every year since 2018 and has contributed more than 100 shoeboxes filled with goods, such as household items, toys and clothing.
