Elizabeth Ling of Calgary, Alta., and
Hazem Issa of Cairo, in Egypt, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 8, 2023.
Ling, a 21-year-old civil engineering senior, was named female athlete of the meet after winning three gold medals and one silver as McGill finished first of six women's teams at the season-opening RSEQ University Cup swim meet in Trois-Rivières, Que., last Friday. The 5-foot-4 sprinter won the 50-metre butterfly (27.58 seconds) and the 100m free (56.98), in addition to helping the 4x50m freestyle relay finish atop the podium (1:45.29). Her silver medal performance was in the 50m backstroke, where she posted a time of 28.83 seconds, just fractions of a second behind the winning time (28.78). She is a product of Westmount Charter School in Calgary.
Issa, a 21-year-old civil engineering junior, was named male athlete of the meet after winning three gold medals and one bronze as McGill finished first of six men's teams at the season-opening RSEQ University Cup swim meet in Trois-Rivières, Que., last Friday. The 6-foot-5, 212-pound sprinter won the 50-metre butterfly (24.59) and guided McGill to victories in both the 4x50m medley relay (1:40.51) and 4x50m freestyle relay (1:32.43). His bronze medal performance was the 100m freestyle (51.34). He enrolled at McGill in 2021 after graduating from Brighton College in Abu Dhabi.
