MONTREAL –
Zachary Lavoie-Toure scored 19 points as McGill defeated UBC-Okanagan 83-77 on the final day of the McGill Classic men's basketball tournament at Love Competition Hall, Sunday.
It was only the second lifetime meeting with the UBCO Heat and the first since a 79-59 McGill victory on Oct. 21, 2016.
The result marked the Redbirds first win of the preseason, snapping a seven-game losing streak. McGill had opened the tourney on Friday with a 78-61 loss to Dalhousie, followed by an 86-65 setback to Toronto, a team coached by "Muddy" Trivedi, by former assistant coach at McGill.
Lavoie-Toure, a 6-foot-5, 203-pound forward from Montreal, was McGill's lone player named to the all-tournament team. The fifth-year psychology senior scored 48 points and grabbed 16 rebounds over the three games, with seven steals and six assists. He shot a sizzling 61.8 per cent from the floor (21/34), going 3-for-7 from three-point range and drained 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Next on tap for McGill is the RSEQ season opener at UQAM on Nov. 2, followed by the official home opener on Nov. 9 against Bishop's.
