Sure-footed Cyr silences Citadins as soccer squad steals stunning upset to get back in playoff race

MONTREAL – Three different players scored for the McGill men's soccer team in a huge 3-1 upset over UQAM at Stade Saputo, Sunday. The victory put McGill back in the thick of the RSEQ playoff race with only one game left to play.

It was a testy affair with UQAM receiving eight of the 10 cards issued, including a pair of ejections in the final minute of play. The Citadins also took 11 of the 19 fouls called.

McGill midfielder Nassim Kemel, a native of Algeria, opened the scoring in the 23rd minute of play with his team-leading fourth of the season. Just four minutes later,  freshman striker Mathis Cyr of Riviere du Loup, Que., tallied his third of the campaign to give the Redbirds a two-goal cushion with what proved to be the game-winning goal.

The Citadins narrowed the gap to 2-1 when Emilien Hedou found the back of the net in the 59th minute. But with UQAM pressing in the final minute, Yosr Frej, a junior midfielder from Morocco, added an insurance marker.

Making only his second appearance of the regular season, McGill goalkeeper Gavin McFee, a 5-foot-11 sophomore from Kelowna, B.C., saved five of the six shots faced and collected his first career win. UQAM 'keeper Martin Cantona took the loss, conceding three goals on seven shots.

McGill (3-5-3) sits fifth in the seven-team RSEQ conference, two points behind Laval (3-3-5), which currently has a feeble grip on the final playoff berth. Should Laval lose its next game, against visiting Concordia (3-5-3) on Oct. 20, McGill would be in position to clinch the last playoff spot with a win over last-place Sherbrooke (0-9-2) on Oct. 22. In this scenario, McGill and Concordia would be tied for fourth with identical records and they split their season series with each winning by a goal. A Concordia-Laval tie would also be favourable to McGill.
