Emma-Jane Scotten was named Tournament MVP and teammate
Katerina Stoupas earned all-tourney honours as McGill defeated the host Voyageurs 66-59 to capture the Laurentian Invitational women's basketball tournament, Sunday, at the Ben Avery Gym in Sudbury.
It was the third straight win for the Martlets to open the preseason and the second consecutive tournament title dating back to last season when they captured the McGill Invitational. The last time that McGill started out the season with three consecutive wins was in 2017-18 when the Martlets went to win the national championship.
Scotten, a 5-foot-9 guard from Ottawa, scored a tourney-leading 33 points and 26 rebounds. She added 11 assists and three steals. Over her three starts, The 21-year-old is an education in global contexts major. She shot 36.4 per cent from the field (12/33), went 3-for-10 from three-point range, and drained six of nine free-throw attempts.
Stoupas scored 25 points and pulled down a tourney-leading 34 rebounds. She added eight assists and four steals, and shot a stellar 52.4 per cent (11 of 21), was 1-for-1 from the arc and went 2-for-8 from the line.
The Martlets led 18-13 after one quarter and took a 35-29 lead into halftime. The LU Voyageurs won the third quarter 15-11 but McGill took the final frame 20-15.
The Martlets will put their three-game streak on the line when they host Queen's on Oct. 14 in a 2 p.m. tip-off at Love Competition Hall.
