Marley Curwin of Halifax scored 14 points and
Jayda Veinot of Port Williams, N.S., added 13 as the University of New Brunswick Reds overpowered McGill 77-35 in a women's basketball opener at the Helen Campbell Memorial Tournament, held Friday in the Richard J. Currie Centre.
The match-up was the first pre-season game for both teams and marked the 103rd anniversary of the first women's intercollegiate basketball season in Canada, which was initiated with a 21-16 McGill victory over Queen's on Feb. 6, 1920.
Despite being one of the oldest programs in Canada, McGill has one of the youngest teams, with a roster that features four rookies, five sophomores, two juniors and a pair of seniors.
UNB, which had points from every player in the line-up, took a 22-9 lead after the first quarter, stretched it to 33-12 at halftime, held a 51-22 advantage after three and won the final stanza 26-13.
Katie Rathwell from North Battleford, Sask., came off the bench to pace the Martlets with 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting. She added three rebounds and a steal.

McGill connected on only 23.1 per cent of their attempts from the field (12/52), went 4-for-21 from the three-point arc and drained seven of 12 attempts at the charity stripe. The Reds shot 38.6 per cent (27/70), drained seven of 27 treys and shot 16 of 24 from the line.
Earlier on Friday, the Cape Breton Capers built a 20-plus point lead then hung on to beat the Manitoba Bisons 78-75.
McGill returns to the court on Saturday (Oct .1) to face Cape Breton (1 p.m. EDT) followed by a Manitoba-UNB matchup at 5 p.m. EDT. The tourney wraps up on Sunday.
