No. 3 ranked Carabins stretch undefeated streak to four with victory over Redbirds

MONTREAL -- Carl Chabot of Blainville, Que., paced the offence with a pair of touchdowns as the No. 3 ranked Montreal Carabins stretched their undefeated streak to four with a 29-12 victory over McGill in university football action at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.

The Carabins generated 21 first downs and 356 yards of net offence, compared to McGill's 19 and 166, respectively. Montreal, which won the turnover battle 3-1,  improved to 4-0 and remain as one of four undefeated teams across the U SPORTS standings, along with Saskatchewon (4-0), Western (4-0) and St.FX (3-0).

Perhaps more impressively, a voracious Carabins defence racked up nine quarterback sacks, compared to just two by McGill. Redbirds freshman pivot Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald was under pressure all day and went 14-for-27 passing, for 166 yards. He entered the game as the league's leading rusher but was limited to just 12 yards on four carries.

The Redbirds led 5-0 after the opening quarter but UdeM rallied to win the next two stanzas by 19-0 and 10-1, respectively. McGill won the final quarter 6-0 but it was too little, too late.

McGill kicker Antoine Couture accounted for 10 points, going 3-for-4 in field-goal attempts, connecting from distances of 22, 25 and 44. He added a rouge on a missed 37-yarder. Couture also averaged 39.2 yards on eight punts and 58.0 yards on two kickoffs.

A safety touch rounded out the McGill scoring.

Chabot, a 5-foot-7, 173-pound receiver, led all players with 123 all-purpose yards. The elusive junior collected 76 of them on seven receptions, 35 on two rushes and 12 on five punt returns. His four-yard TD run just 16 seconds into the second quarter put the Carabins ahead 7-5. He later hooked up with quarterback Jonathan Senecal for a 15-yard TD reception to give the Carabins a commanding 26-5 lead at 3:14 of the third stanza.

Senecal completed 20 of 29 passing attempts for 291 yards, one touchdown and one pick.

The only other TD in the game was a three-yard run by Rakim Canal-Charles that resulted in a 16-5 Montreal advantage.at 10:02 of the second period.

Rounding out the visitors scoring was a pair of safety touches and kicker Philippe Boyer, who added seven points, including a 21-yard field-goal and a 60-yard rouge on a missed 40-yard attempt.

Next week, McGill (0-4) will travel into the lion's den in Quebec City to face Laval on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 1:30 p.m. The Rouge et Or are 2-1 heading into their upcoming matchup with visiting Concordia (1-2) on Sunday (Sept. 25).

The Carabins will be on a bye week and return to action on Oct. 8 at home against Concordia.

REDBIRDS RAP: Leading the McGill defensive corps was DB Thomas Raphael with six total tackles (4 solos), plus DL Nassib Hassouna and DB Tristan Fleury, with five tackles apiece... Rookie Thomas Angelin added four tackles and registered his first career interception, along with a knockdown... McGill sacks were credited to Hassouna and Alexandre Mayer.
