COTE ST. LUC, Que -- Rookie outfielder
Jonas Press of Toronto had three hits, including a home run, and collected a single-game school record six runs batted in as McGill cruised to a lopsided 16-6 vicory over visiting Laurentian University in the opener of a baseball doubleheader, Saturday, at Gary Carter Field.
It was the seventh consecutive victory for McGill but their first competition after four consecutive cancelations due to poor weather and unplayable field conditions,
Despite a lengthy 685-kilometre trip from Sudbury, Ont., the Voyageurs took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. But the weary travelers wilted as McGill pounded out 15 hits and roared back with four in the third inning, a whopping seven in the fourth and five more in the sixth.
Press, a 19-year-old political science freshman, surpassed the previous school mark of five RBIs held by numerous players. Hitting from the No.3 spot in the batting order, the 6-foot-3, 175-pound left-fielder went 3-for-5 at the plate and came around to score three times.
First baseman
Auguste Guern, a native of France, batted 2-for-2 with four RBIs and came around to score a pair of runs. Right-fielder
Will Bompey, a 20-yeaar-old freshman from New York City, went 2-for-3, with a homer, two RBIs and two runs.
