MONTREAL -- A penalty-kick by rookie midfielder
Elisabeth Pronovost of Chambly, Que., proved fruitful as the McGill women's soccer team held on for a 2-1 victory over cross-town rival Concordia, Friday, to capture the 15th annual
Erica Cadieux Memorial game 2-1.
McGill improved its record to 6-0-1 lifetime against Concordia in this event, which honours Erica Cadieux-Spadafora, a young mother and lawyer who died tragically at 34 years of age when she was struck by a car in January of 2006 in Beaconsfield, Que.
"It was a tough game," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes. "Concordia played a well-organized (structured) style defensively, so getting through was no easy task but we forced a few opportunities that resulted in two goals. In the end, we were happy with the result because this has been a difficult place to play over the last few years."
As the first half was drawing to an end with the game even at 1-1, Pronovost, a 19-year-old science freshman majoring in psychology, stepped up and struck gold on a penalty kick awarded in the 42nd minute. That proved to be the game's final marker.
"We selected her for the PK shot because it was an easy choice," Valdes said. "She is cold-blooded, nothing fazes her and she doesn't get emotional in those situations. Defensively she has tons of grit and a passion for the sport and has a bit of a bite."
Striker
Giovanna Tiberio of Montreal had put the Martlets ahead 1-0 in the seventh minute of play but Concordia evened the count on
Bryanna Campbell's goal in the 24th minute.
Montrealer
Sophie Guilmette kicked out five of six shots for the win, while Concordia 'keeper
Anastasia Fox registered five saves in a losing cause.
The fourth-place Martlets improved their record to 3-3-0 in the eight-team RSEQ conference, while winless Concordia dropped to 0-3-3 and remain in a tie for seventh place with Sherbrooke (0-4-2)
McGill will host Sherbrooke on Sunday (Sept. 25) at 3:30 p.m., while Concordia place the second-place Montreal Carabins (5-1-0) at the same start time.
