Labrecque tallies twice but Gaels erase early deficit to clip Martlets again in hockey rematch

KINGSTON, Ont -- Marika Labrecque scored twice for McGill but it proved insufficient as the Queen's Gaels skated to a 4-2 victory in a women's hockey exhibition rematch, Sunday, at the Cataraqui Centre.

A day earlier, Queen's had rallied for a 4-3 overtime victory at McGill to open the preseason schedule.

Labrecque, a fifth-year power forward from Lac Etchemin, Que.,  had opened the scoring early in the first period but Queen's rebounded to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission on markers by Carys Collie (14:16) and Scout Watkins-Southward (18:45)

Quinn Johnston paced the Gaels, scoring the winning tally at 6:35 of the second period after setting up Collie's goal.

Labrecque knotted the score at 11:15 of the middle stanza but the Gaels regained the two-goal cushion in the final period when Alex Maw connected at 18:33.

McGill had a 35-33 edge in shots but Gaels goalie Vanessa Campeau registered 33 saves for the victory. Martlets netminder Sarah Carmichael was charged with the loss, saving 29 of 33 shots.

McGill was 0-for-3 on the power-play, while Queen's went 1-for-2.

The Gaels (2-0) will continue their preseason schedule with games at Ottawa and Bishop's, Sept. 23-24, respectively.

The Martlets (0-2) will turn their focus on the upcoming Theresa Humes Tournament at Concordia, Sept. 23-25. McGill opens against UNB on Friday at 3:30 p.m., then will play UBC on Saturday at 7 p.m. The medal round is slated for Sunday.
