MONTREAL --
Ashley Stratton tallied twice to lead the UNB Reds en route to a 4-2 victory over McGill in the women's hockey opener at Concordia's Theresa Humes Cup tournament, Friday.
It was a rematch of last spring's quarter-final confrontation at the Nationals in Charlottetown, a 5-4 overtime shootout victory for UNB.
The Reds led 2-0 after the opening period on goals by
Jenna MacLean (12:33) and Stratton (15:52). McGill roared back with second period goals from
Christiana Colizza (3:44) and
Quynn Campbell (17:33). But a late goal by Stratton at 18-minute mark put UNB ahead after two.
Despite McGill pressing late in the third period,
Tamina Kehler put the game out of reach at 17:20 of the final stanza.
The Reds outshot McGill by a 30-14 margin as UNB goaltender
Cassie McCallum made 12 saves for the victory, while McGill sophomore
Sophie Lajeunesse kicked out 26 and took the loss.
The Martlets were 1-for-2 on the power play, while UNB went 1-for-4.
MARTLET MURMURS: McGill was without the services of power forward
Marika Labrecque, who was recovering from an injury suffered last week, when she tallied three times and added an assist in a pair of preseason losses to Queen's. She earned McGill's athlete of the week honours, then played with the varsity golf team at a tournament in Trois-Rivieres on Monday and Tuesday to become became the first McGill athlete to compete for different varsity teams in the same week.
