MONTREAL –
Sarah Campbell scored at 3:49 of sudden-death overtime as visiting Queen's rallied for a 4-3 victory over McGill in the women's hockey preseason opener at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
The Martlets led 1-0 on a
Quynn Campbell goal at 4:34 of the opening period and upped that to 2-0 when
Lydia MacLellan tallied at 6:02 of the middle stanza.
But Queen's roared back with second period markers from
Scout Watkins-Southward and
Alicia Juras, then took a 3-2 lead at 5:39 of the third period on
Kelsey Dunn's goal.
McGill senior
Marika Labrecque forced overtime when her goal at 14:51 of the third period knotted the scoreboard at 3-3.
The Gaels, who held a 38-33 edge in shots, went 0-for-1 on the power-play, while McGill was 2-for 4. The Martlets, however, couldn't capitalize on a manpower advantage situation in overtime when
Watkins-Southward was called for hooking only 23 seconds into the extra frame.
Queen's netminder
Lexi Georgi saved 30 of 33 shots for the victory, while
Sophie Lajeunesse, a sophomore from Calgary, started in the McGill net and kicked aside 34 of 38 shots in a losing cause.
Both teams have less than 24 hours before crossing paths again, on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Kingston, Ont.
