COTE ST. LUC, Que –
Milo Young had a pair of hits and reached base on an error to drive in the winning run as McGill rallied from a five-run deficit for an 8-7 baseball victory over the Université de Montréal, Thursday.
It was McGill's fourth consecutive victory –each of them at Gary Carter Field in Pierre Elliot Trudeau Park – improving the team's record to 8-4 overall.
Young, a 20-year-old industrial relations sophomore from Honolulu, batted second in the order and went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run scored, an RBI and also got on base after being hit by a pitch. He gave McGill a walk-off victory in the bottom of the eighth inning. The 5-foot-10, 145-pound infielder muscled out a hard hit ground ball to second baseman
Xavier Guimond whose throwing error resulted in
Jett Jarvis scoring the decisive run all the way from second base.
Jarvis, a fleet-footed centrefielder from Petrolia, Ont., had reached base on a bunt single to the pitcher's mound with one out. The management freshman followed with a stolen base, to set the stage for the game-winning play. It was the third run of the game for Jarvis, who batted 1-for-5 with an RBI.
The visiting Carabins had scored three times in the top of the third inning and added two more in the fifth to take what appeared to be a 5-0 stranglehold over McGill. Undaunted, the Redbirds roared back with three in the bottom of the fifth, then added three more the next inning but found themselves trailing 7-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
McGill knotted the score at 7-7to force extra innings when rookie infielder
Brad Marelich of La Cañada Flintridge, Calif., reached base on an error. He was sacrificed to second by senior
Matthew Rachman of Surrey, B.C., and scored on an RBI single to right by
Carlos Vallejos, a sophomore from Ottawa.
Nathaniel Factor, the last of six McGill pitchers on the day, was credited with the win in relief of starter
Platon Leftakis, who only lasted 1.1 innings. For U de M,
Frédéric Archand Groleau was charged with the loss in relief of starter
Vincent Ouellette.
McGill (8-4) now hits the road for a pair of weekend doubleheaders. The Redbirds will look to extend their win streak to five when they make a two-hour bus-trip to play Ottawa in the nation's capital on Saturday (Sept. 17), beginning at 12 noon. The following day, McGill heads east for a 90-minute jaunt to Trois-Rivieres., Que., to confront College Lafleche in a twin-bill slated for a 12 noon start.
